Brazil's first female President Dilma Rousseff impeached; Senate votes 61 to 20 to convict her of breaking budget laws

Brazil's first female President Dilma Rousseff impeached; Senate votes 61 to 20 to convict her of breaking budget laws
Brazil's suspended President Dilma Rousseff was impeached today Wednesday August 31 following a 61-20 vote by the country’s senate.

Senators broke into protest, cheers and applause after the electronic voting, which went on for hours, was announced. Pro-impeachment senators burst into a rendering of the national anthem, some waving Brazilian flags, while allies of Rousseff stood stony face.
 Senators broke into protes
"I will not associate my name to this infamy," read a sign held up by one senator.

68-year-old Rousseff, the country's first female president, will be removed from office and replaced by Vice President Michel Temer, 75. He will be sworn in on Wednesday to serve out her term which extends through 2018.

The impeachment comes two days after Rousseff staged an impassioned defense of her actions on Monday and insisted she was innocent of any wrongdoing in an lengthy speech before the senate. Lawmakers had charged that she breached fiscal rules in an attempt to cover up the nation’s budget woes.
Lawmakers had charged
"I know I will be judged, but my conscience is clear. I did not commit a crime," Rousseff, told senators on Monday. "I can’t help but taste the bitterness of injustice."

Rousseff described the impeachment process, which has been going on for about a year, amounted to an illegal coup.  She said the move was aimed at protecting the interests of the country's economic elite and rolling back social programs that lifted millions of Brazilians from poverty during the last decade.

Recalling how she was tortured and imprisoned in the 1970s for belonging to a leftist guerrilla group, Rousseff urged senators to "vote against impeachment, vote for democracy. Do not accept a coup.

Her opponents, however, have hailed the chance to turn the page on a drawn-out political crisis, the country's worst recession and a sweeping corruption scandal at state oil company Petrobras.

About 50 leftist demonstrators gathered outside the presidential palace to show their support.

"We are protesting against the coup and fighting for democracy," said 61-year-old farmer Orlando Ribeiro.

In the center of the capital, extra security and the closing of avenues near the Senate caused massive traffic jams. Police said they were preparing for large protests later in the day.

Lawyers presenting closing arguments could not hold back their emotions as the clock wound down on a crisis that has paralyzed Brazilian politics for months. A lead lawyer for the case against Rousseff, Senator Janaina Paschoal, wept as she asked forgiveness for causing the president "suffering," but insisted it was the right thing to do.

"The Brazilian people must be aware that nothing illegal and illegitimate is being done here," she said.

Rousseff's counsel, veteran lawyer Jose Eduardo Cardozo, retorted that the charges were trumped up to punish the president's support for a huge corruption investigation that has snared many of Brazil's elite.

"This is a farce," he said in a speech during which his voice alternated between shouts and near whispers. We should ask her forgiveness if she is convicted," he added. "History will treat her fairly. History will absolve Dilma Rousseff if you convict her."

Cardozo said shhe would appeal the impeachment through the Supreme Court. Rousseff is the first Brazilian leader to be dismissed from office since 1992, when Fernando Collor de Mello resigned before a final vote in his impeachment trial for corruption.

Gunmen in military uniform abduct three Lagos estate landlords

Gunmen in military uniform abduct three Lagos estate landlords
There is tension in New Haven Estate, Igbelaju, in the Iba area of  Lagos State, after some gunmen in military uniform abducted three landlords in the estate.

Two of the landlords were reportedly abducted while going to their workplaces.
It was gathered that in the attack on Saturday, a woman, identified only as Mrs. Nwoche, was abducted from her residence and had yet to be released.
Our correspondent learnt that as residents grappled with the shock, the gunmen on Monday at about 11am, reportedly waylaid two other landlords driving out of the estate and ordered them to the creek at gunpoint.
While one of the victims was identified only as Mr. Chima, the name of the other had yet to be ascertained.
The matter was said to have been reported at the Ojo Police Division, which sent operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, to comb the area.
When PUNCH Metro visited the area on Wednesday, it was gathered that the three landlords had yet to be found.
Although most of the estate residents were unwilling to comment on the incident, a commercial motorcyclist, who gave his name only as Ebuka, showed our correspondent the narrow bushy path through which the gunmen reportedly sneaked into the estate.
He said, “I did not witness the Saturday incident because it was around 9pm and people only heard some gunshots and ran inside their houses. The gunmen went away with a woman who stayed in a luxury apartment. She has yet to return.
“On Monday, the hoodlums came out in the morning. You would think they were soldiers who came to inspect the area. I saw them in military uniform standing near the plank bridge and holding a rifle.
“I was passing by with a passenger, but I saw that one of them held a pump-action rifle. Seconds later, they stopped two men who were driving out of the estate. The men were in different Sport Utility Vehicles, but were behind each other.
“They ordered them to come out and follow them. That was how they led the victims away into the swamp. We have yet to see either of them. Everyone is afraid. We suspect that the hoodlums are the militants who escaped from the military bombardments of the creeks.”
A worker on a building site, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “I was going to the site when I saw the soldiers standing by the bridge. They looked as if they had come to make an arrest.
“No one knew they were kidnappers. The family members of the victims have not been contacted. They are still in the dark. Some residents have fled from the estate for fear of abduction.
“Policemen in three vans came after the incident to patrol the area. They have been patrolling the estate since Monday, but the abducted landlords have yet to return.”
Our correspondent observed an armoured tank belonging to the RRS driving into the swamp as he was leaving the estate.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the attack. She said operatives of the command were already on a rescue mission.
She said, “The command received the report that some men in military camouflage came under the guise of making an arrest and whisked away a landlord.
“Effort is on to ensure his release and subsequent arrest of the suspects.”

Brazil sacks President for budget padding

Dilma Rousseff
Dilma Rousseff
Brazil’s Senate has voted in favour of permanently removing President Dilma Rousseff from her office, in an impeachment trial set to end 13 years of leftist rule in the country, Al Jazeera reports.

Sixty-one of 81 senators voted against Rousseff on Wednesday after a five-day trial and a lengthy overnight debate.
“Today is the day that 61 men, many of them charged and corrupt, threw 54 million Brazilian votes in the garbage,” Rousseff tweeted minutes after the decision.
In a separate vote senators decided not to ban Rousseff from seeking a public office for the next eight years.
Al Jazeera reported that Rousseff was watching the session from the presidential palace and would speak a couple of hours after the vote at a news conference.
She also said that the case was not expected to go any further as the charges were political, not criminal.
Allies of Rousseff have signalled that they would take the case to the Supreme Court. But several motions filed to the country’s highest court throughout the impeachment proceedings have failed.
Rousseff’s former vice-president turned rival Michel Temer, 75, was sworn in as president on Wednesday until the next scheduled election in late 2018.
Rousseff, from the leftist Workers’ Party, is accused of taking illegal state loans to patch budget holes in 2014, masking the country’s problems as it slid into its deepest recession in decades.
She told the Senate that she was innocent, saying the impeachment trial amounted to a right-wing coup d’etat.
Rousseff asserted that impeachment was the price she paid for refusing to quash a wide-ranging police investigation into the state oil company Petrobras, saying that corrupt politicians conspired to oust her to derail the investigation into billions in kickbacks at the oil giant.
She said it was “an irony of history” that she would be judged for crimes she did not commit, by people accused of serious crimes.
The Workers’ Party under Rousseff and her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is credited with raising around 29 million Brazilians out of poverty.
But many now blame the party and Rousseff in particular for the country’s multiple ills.

Aero suspends operations, sends workers on indefinite leave

Aero suspends operations, sends workers on indefinite leave

Aero Contractors Airlines, Nigeria’s second largest commercial carrier, has confirmed an exclusive report by announcing the suspension of its scheduled services beginning from Thursday September 1, 2016.
On Monday, August 22, 2016, The PUNCH exclusively reported that the airline was set to lay off some of its workers as its financial crisis became worse.
The report also noted that the carrier was in talks with aviation unions on how to cut down on the number of workers in its employ, just as sources from the sector said the airline was contemplating a suspension of its flight services.
Confirming this in a statement signed by the carrier’s management on Wednesday, Aero stated that the suspension was part of the strategic business realignment to reposition the airline and return it to the part of profitability.
It stated that this business decision, which was a result of the current economic situation in the country, had forced some other airlines to suspend operations or outright pull out of Nigeria.
The airline said, “The impact of the external environment has been very harsh on our operational performance, hence the management decision to suspend scheduled services operations indefinitely effective September 1, 2016, pending when the external opportunities and a robust sustainable and viable plan is in place for Aero Contractors to recommence its scheduled services.
“The implication of the suspension of scheduled services operations extends to all staff members directly and indirectly involved in providing services as they are effectively to proceed on indefinite leave of absence during the period of non-services.”
As passengers, who had earlier booked travel tickets online stormed the ticketing counters of Aero in some airports, the airline had to swiftly announce that it would refund the payments made by the intending travellers.
Officials of the firm told our correspondent that the carrier had also agreed to refund those who may have made payments for tickets in cash for trips that were to happen on Thursday, September 1, 2016.
They stated that the airline had to suspend its operations due to issues of forex, inability to bring back some of its aircraft that were flown out for maintenance, as well as the precarious financial situation of the company, despite being taken over by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria.
A senior official of the carrier who spoke to our correspondent in confidence said, “I cannot give you a date as to when the suspension of the scheduled flight services will be lifted. This is because the economic parameters in Nigeria are currently so bad that one cannot plan with it. However, our rotary wing, that is helicopter service and charter operations are still operating.”

55-year-old guard abducts, rapes 14-year-old for four days

55-year-old guard abducts, rapes 14-year-old for four days
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old security guard, Yekini Ogunjobi, for alleged unlawful detention of a teenage girl in his apartment for four days.

The police said Ogunjobi raped the 14-year-old victim, Blessing (pseudonym) during her incarceration before she was rescued from the apartment on Esuola Street, Oko-Oba, in the Agege area of Lagos.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Blessing, an apprentice tailor in the neighbourhood, was sent on an errand on Esuola Street, when the suspect summoned her.
She was reportedly hypnotised and lured into a room by the suspect, who allegedly raped her for four days.
It was gathered that Blessing’s family, who had declared her missing, had reported to the police.
However, on July 28, one of her relatives was said to be passing by the street when she sighted her and raised the alarm.
The relative reported to the police, who rescued the girl and arrested Ogunjobi.
“The man had told his neighbours that the girl was his relative and had come to live with him. Probably, he charmed the girl so that she would not resist the abduction. He had sex with her against her consent for four days. She was sent on an errand on the day he abducted her,” a police source told our correspondent.
On Tuesday, Ogunjobi was brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court by a police prosecutor, Sergeant Rafael Donny, on two counts bordering on abduction and rape.
Donny told the court that the accused abducted the victim for four days  and sexually molested her, adding that the offences contravened sections 141(a) and 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State,  2011.
The charge read, “That you, Yekini Ogunjobi, between July 25 and 28, 2016, on Esuola Street, Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did commit felony to wit: abduction.
“That you, on the same date time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did unlawfully detain a 14-year-old girl and have sexual intercourse with her against her consent, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary trial.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr. Tajudeen Elias, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum..
Elias adjourned the case till October 6, 2016 for mention.

Saudi Arabian court sentences a man to 10 years in jail, £4k fine and 2,000 lashes for tweeting that he was an atheist

Saudi Arabian
In Saudi Arabia there's a law that places atheists and atheistic beliefs as 'terrorism', hence a man who tweeted that he was an atheist has been fined £4,000 and sentenced to 10 years in jail with 2000 lashes of the cane by a high court in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia's Islamic police found over 600 tweets by the 28 year old man denying the existence of God, ridiculing Koranic verses, accusing all prophets of lies and saying their teaching fueled hostilities, and after the Islamic court gave him all this punishments the man has refused to 'repent' saying he only aired his beliefs and he still stands by them.
In 2014 the late King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia issued royal decrees aimed at clamping down on all forms of political dissent and protests that could “harm public order”.
One of the articles of the decrees defined terrorism as “calling for atheist thought in any form, or calling into question the fundamentals of the Islamic religion on which this country is based”.
Joe Stork, deputy Middle East and North Africa director of Human Rights Watch, said  “Saudi authorities have never tolerated criticism of their policies, but these recent laws and regulations turn almost any critical expression or independent association into crimes of terrorism.”

Car chased by policemen crashes into family, kills two

Car chased by policemen crashes into family, kills two
Two people in South London have been crushed to death after a car being chased by police crashed into pedestrians.

The incident happened at about 2.05pm on Wednesday in Lennard Road, Penge.
The car, according to reports was being chased by police when it rammed into a number of people who were in Lennard Road.
The car was being chased because it had been reported stolen.
An eyewitness said, “People were trying to lift a car off a little girl. The police officers that were chasing the car were distraught.”
According to Independent IE, another eyewitness said apart from the two people who died, he saw two casualties who were children being taken away by ambulance.
One Tayla Goodman told Sky News she saw “children running away” from the scene in “absolute tears, unable to speak”.
She said, “then a lady ran out across from Penge east station shouting ‘that’s my baby’ … ‘that’s my baby over there’.
“It just looked like complete carnage. It was absolutely awful to see what happened.”
She said the car was “ploughed into the grass bank” of the housing estate and described people “running through” police tape and screaming.
18-year-old Venissa Vassell said she heard sirens and a car screeching as she walked from the train station and immediately ran to help.
She said there were twin girls aged around seven trapped under the car and 20 people came to lift the car up to free them.
The girls “crawled out”, she said, but another girl, aged around 11, who was later taken away by ambulance, was screaming ‘I can’t feel my legs’.
Another woman, believed to be in her late 30s or early 40s, and 10-year-old boy she was was related to, were killed, Vassell said.

Niger Delta militants are confused, says NNPC

Niger Delta militants are confused, says NNPC
There is an indication that the Federal Government has yet to commence any negotiation with the Niger Delta militants as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has declared that the militants are confused.

According to the NNPC, the confusion has made government officials more cautious, as it has triggered “serious concern” in the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
The corporation noted that the inability of the militants to abide by the ceasefire agreement announced earlier in the month and the dissenting voices among the various agitating groups in the region had shown that there was confusion among them.
When asked to state the militant group that government was negotiating with, considering the fact that there had been different statements from various agitators in the region, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Mr. Mohammed Garba-Deen, referred our correspondent to the Media Head, FMPR, Mr. Idang Alibi.
But Alibi could not be reached as he did not answer calls to his telephone and did not respond to a text message sent to him up till the time of filing this report.
However, when probed further, Garba-Deen stated that the ministry and, in fact, the NNPC, were concerned about the confusion among militants in the Niger Delta.
He refuted claims that the Federal Government had also been thrown into confusion as touching which group to negotiate with.
Garba-Deen said, “There is no confusion on the part of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources. If anybody is confused, it is the militants that are confused because they are disorganised. They have refused to organise themselves into one, instead they have NDA, MEND and many others.
“So under this circumstance, the petroleum ministry is taking its time so that it does not negotiate with the wrong people. And that is not confusion. That is caution. The situation is causing concern and not confusion on our side, because we will like a situation where a credible and authentic group emerges.
“And whichever group emerges, it should have all the backing of those making agitations in the Niger Delta. So it is therefore important to state that we are not confused but cautious, because from all indications, the confusion is on the part of the militants from the region.”

Michel Temer to be sworn in as Brazil’s president

Michel Temer to be sworn in as Brazil’s president
Michel Temer will be sworn in as president of Brazil at 1900 GMT Wednesday after Dilma Rousseff was stripped of the post, the leader of the Senate said.

Senate president Renan Calheiros told the chamber that acting president Temer, 75, would be sworn in as full head of state after members convicted Rousseff of breaking state accounting laws at an impeachment trial.
Rousseff, 68, was convicted by 61 of the 81 senators of illegally manipulating the national budget. The vote, passing the needed two-thirds majority, meant she was immediately removed from office.
Cheers and cries of disappointment had erupted in the blue-carpeted, circular Senate chamber as the verdict flashed up on the electronic voting screen.

Chris Brown released on $250k bail, Lawyer insists the allegations are false
Singer Chris Brown was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a guest at his Los Angeles residence, Baylee Curran, called for help from the police around 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
According to Curran, he pointed a gun at her face after he became angry when she complimented another man's diamond necklace. A search warrant was obtained by the police and after a nearly 14-hour standoff, he was taken into custody.

Chris has however been released on $250,000 bail. His lawyer Mark Garagos is insisting that the allegations made against the singer are false. More interestingly, the woman claiming Chris pulled a gun on her is wanted in New York for questioning in connection with criminal theft.
