Eid-el-Fitri: Buhari prays inside military barracks amidst tight security

Eid-el-Fitri: Buhari prays inside military barracks amidst tight security

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday joined Muslim faithful for special prayers to mark Eid-el-Fitri, the end of the Ramadan fast.
Buhari, however, did not take part in the Sallah prayers at the National Prayer Ground, located opposite the Military Cemetery on Airport Road, Abuja, as it is customary with top government officials.
This year, the President decided to take part in the prayer session at a prayer ground located inside the Mambilla Military Barracks, Aso Drive, Asokoro, Abuja.
No official reason was given for the decision, which a source described as a “last-minute decision.”
In Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, notable political leaders in the state, were, on Wednesday, absent at the Yidi Prayer Ground, during the Eid-el-Fitri.
Some of the politicians, who were not at the ceremony, included Senate President Bukola Saraki; Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed; Speaker, state House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad; a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Kawu Baraje; members of the national and state assemblies and many government appointees, especially from  the Ilorin Emirate.
In Jos, Plateau State, the streets of the state capital and Bukuru metropolis were almost empty as Muslims celebrated the Eid-el-Fitri.
The situation was also compounded by the uncertainty surrounding the actual day of the end of the Ramadan fast.
In Abuja, many people, including top government officials and journalists, who thought the President would pray at the National Prayer Ground as usual, hurriedly left the ground and rushed to the barracks when they finally found out that Buhari would not observe the prayer at the prayer ground.
Buhari was joined at the prayer ground by top government officials, including the Minister of Defence, Masur Dan-Alli.
Security chiefs, including the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Munguno (retd.), and the acting Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, also joined the President’s entourage.
Meanwhile, security was beefed up around the two prayer grounds and other ones across the Federal Capital Territory while the Eid-el-Fitri prayer lasted.
There had been speculations that the Boko Haram sect might carry out attacks during the Eid-el-Fitri.
At the Mogadishu Barracks, along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, worshippers were seen being frisked before they were allowed access into the prayer arena.
Their cars were also thoroughly searched before they were allowed to park inside the car park behind the barracks’ Mammy Market.
Armed soldiers, attached to the Guards Brigade, policemen and officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, maintained visible presence across major areas in the FCT while the prayers lasted.
They were also sighted at major fun spots in Abuja.
Saraki, Baraje absent, Ahmed picks private mosque, worshippers miss prayer
Despite the absence of Saraki, Ahmed, Baraje and Ahmed among many other at the prayer ground, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and Chief Imam of Ilorin, Alhaji Muhammadu Soliu, however, observed the prayers at the Yidi Prayer Ground.
Speculations had been rife in the state that some people were planning to disrupt the prayers at the venue.
Also some workers in the state, especially employees of the 16 Local Government Areas were said to be aggrieved as a result of the hardship they were experiencing because of their unpaid salaries.
Some miscreants had, last year, stoned and threw sachet water at Saraki and some other dignitaries at the prayer ground.
Also the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Okaula, drafted 1,500 police officers in Ilorin, especially at the prayer ground and the palace of the Emir of Ilorin.
It was gathered that Saraki, Baraje and Ahmad had travelled to Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj while Ahmed was said to have worshiped in a private mosque in Ilorin.
The ceremony at Yidi ground, which normally commences at about 10am, however, started at about 8.45am, catching many of the intending worshippers unawares.
Those who came later missed the prayers
Sulu-Gambari and Soliu made short speeches before they departed the Yidi ground  at about 9.30am.
The Emir, according to a statement by the National Secretary of the Shehu Alimi Foundation for Peace and Development, Mallam Abdulazeez Arowona, urged Muslims to continue to exemplify the worthy life of Prophet Mohammed and extend such to adherents of other religions.
Sulu Gambari urged Kwara State residents to continue to live in peace and always shun violence.
It was gathered that heavily armed security operatives later escorted the Emir out of the Yidi Prayer Ground to his palace.
The Olofa of Offa, Alhaji Muftau Gbadamosi, in a statement, told Muslims to examine their lifestyles and continue to be steadfast in their relationship with fellow human beings in line with the injunctions of the Holy Quran and the exemplary leadership of Prophet Mohammed.
Gbadamosi said, “As a person, group, society and nations of the world, we need to learn how to take care of the destitute and the less privileged amongst us.
“This Sallah is indeed a very unique one. Its uniqueness is borne out of the fact that it did not only mark the end of Ramadan, but an end to the long-time litigation over my appointment as the Olofa of Offa.”
Residents desert Jos roads
In the Plateau State capital, it was learnt that the residents stayed indoors for the greater part of the day due to fear of violence, though this did not stop some faithful from going to their various prayer grounds.
The ceremonies at the prayer ground were performed peacefully amidst tight security.
Speaking at the Wednesday’s celebration at the Central Prayer Ground in Jos, the Chief Imam of Jos, Sheikh Lawal Adam, said after the fast, Muslims were expected to continue with the good deeds of assisting the less privileged as learnt during the Ramadan.

Watch Obama sing 'Happy Birthday' to Malia

President Barack Obama publicly wished his oldest daughter Malia Obama a "happy birthday" on Monday, as she turned 18 on Independence Day.
"It's a job of a father to embarrass his daughters. I've got one last job," he said during his Fourth of July party at the White House before singing the "Happy Birthday" song.
Obama sounded a little hoarse and his voice cracked as he started singing, sounding like he was getting over a cold.
While he was singing, Malia came on stage to hug her father.
The President shared the stage with musicians Kendrick Lamar and Janelle MonĂ¡e, who performed at the Obamas' Fourth of July party at the White House which will be their last.
Obama's has sung publicly at several points throughout his presidency, including more somber events such as a eulogy for South Carolina Rev. Clementa Pinckney in 2015, as well as more light-hearted function, such as when he did his best Al Green impersonation to sing "Let's Stay Together" while at the podium for a campaign event in 2012.

Alton Sterling shooting: Second video of deadly encounter emerges

A second video showing the shooting death of Alton Sterling, a black man shot several times while being held on the ground by police outside a Louisiana convenience store, was posted online Wednesday as federal authorities took charge of the investigation and local officials asked residents to keep their protests peaceful.
The video, obtained by CNN, shows another angle and was recorded closer to the shooting by one of two white Baton Rouge police officers who were answering a 911 report of a man with a gun. It is the second of two bystander videos that show the encounter. One posted online Tuesday night quickly sparked local protests and drew national attention.
In the new 38-second recording, Sterling is already on the ground, on his back. One officer is kneeling to Sterling's left. The other officer appears to be straddling Sterling's legs. Sterling can be seen from the chest up and his lower legs are also visible. His left arms and hands are not visible; his right arm is by his side.
After gunshots are heard, the camera pans to the right then back to Sterling, who has a large blood stain on his chest. The officer who was on his legs now lies on the pavement above Sterling's head, his gun pointed.
The officer radios for an ambulance. As Sterling moves his left arm toward his face and then his chest, the other officer appears to remove something from one of Sterling's right pockets. Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie Jr. said Sterling was armed at the time he was killed and one witness said the officer removed a gun from Sterling's pocket.
Sterling, a 37-year-old man who sold CDs and DVDs outside the store, died of his wounds. The officers involved in Tuesday's shooting -- Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II -- have been placed on administrative leave. A source close to the investigation told CNN the officers were interviewed Tuesday night.

      The first video

At 48 seconds, the first video is longer and begins with the camera facing a car dashboard as the three men stand near the vehicle. A single pop is heard. Then someone yells, "Get on the ground."
      Another pop follows.
The camera then pans up to two officers confronting a man in a red shirt. The man is Sterling, according to his family's attorney.
Alton Sterling shooting: Second video of deadly encounter emerges
An officer pulls him over the hood of a silver car and pins him to the ground. Once he's down, the officer begins to assist a second officer in restraining Sterling.
Seconds later, someone shouts, "He's got a gun."
An officer can be seen drawing something from his waist and pointing it at the man on the ground.
More yelling follows, though it's hard to make out what's being said. Then there are two bangs.
The witnesses inside the car shout and swear. Three more bangs go off. A woman in the car starts crying.

      More witnesses?

Investigators said they'll review multiple videos of the shooting, and they're canvassing for witnesses.
"If you have any information, we urge you to come forward," the police chief said Wednesday.
The owner of the convenience store where Sterling was killed said he's sure the shooting was caught on his store's surveillance cameras, though he hasn't seen it. Police took the video later Tuesday, he told CNN.
There also is police body camera footage of the shooting of Sterling -- even though the cameras were dislodged -- Baton Rouge police Lt. Johnny Dunham told reporters. The cameras continued to record, he added.
"That footage may not be as good as we hoped for," Dunham said.
Authorities haven't said what those police videos or other surveillance footage of the scene show.
A source involved in the investigation told CNN that none of it is nearly as clear as two bystander videos. The source also told CNN the witness who called 911 said Sterling was "brandishing a gun," not pointing it at someone.

      The 'CD man'

Sterling was known as the "CD man," a laid-back guy who would sell tunes and DVDs outside the convenience store where he was shot, according to local media.
"Alton was a respected man. He was beloved in the community. He did not deserve the treatment and this excessive force that was exerted on him by the police department," Jordan, his attorney, told CNN.
Now Sterling's family is "grieving and mourning for an unnecessary loss of life," the attorney said.
"Alton was out there selling CDs, trying to make a living. He was doing it with the permission of the store owner, so he wasn't trespassing or anything like that. He wasn't involved in any criminal conduct," Jordan said.
Abdullah Muflahi, the owner of the Triple S Food Mart, said he saw the officers slam Sterling on a car.
"They told him not to move," he said. "He was asking them what he did wrong."
He said the officers then used a Taser on Sterling at least once before shooting.
Both got on top of him, and one ordered him not to move, Muflahi said.
The one closest to Sterling's legs yelled "gun," he said, and the shots followed.
After the shooting, Muflahi said an officer reached into Sterling's pocket and pulled out a gun.
Muflahi said he'd known Sterling for six years and never saw a confrontation between Sterling and anyone. Sterling never got into fights, he said. And the store owner said he wasn't aware of any incident Tuesday that would have spurred a 911 call.
"Just five minutes before," Muflahi said, "he walked into the store getting something to drink, joking around, (and we were) calling each other names."
Later, Muflahi said he didn't hear Sterling say anything after the initial confrontation.
"(Sterling) was really confused," Muflahi said. "He didn't know what was going on or why they were there."
He said Sterling never showed a weapon.
"The gun was never anywhere in his hand, nor his hand wasn't near, inside his pocket," he said.
Sterling has had encounters with law enforcement before.
In 2009, he was charged with carrying a weapon (a firearm) while in possession of a controlled substance (marijuana). He pleaded guilty two years later and was sentenced to five years in prison, with credit for time served and a recommendation of work release and drug treatment. Sterling had pleaded guilty to other charges in the past.
There's no evidence that officers who responded to the convenience store early Tuesday were aware of his criminal history.

The new 'Iron Man' is a black woman

Iron Man" writer Brian Michael Bendis told Time the inspiration for Williams came from his time spent working a few years ago on a television show in Chicago.
The show did not end up airing, he said, because of the amount of violent content.

"This story of this brilliant, young woman whose life was marred by tragedy that could have easily ended her life—just random street violence—and went off to college was very inspiring to me," Bendis said. "I thought that was the most modern version of a superhero or superheroine story I had ever heard. And I sat with it for awhile until I had the right character and the right place."

Speculation that Williams was coming started a few months ago with her appearance in Invincible Iron Man Vol 2 #7.
Bendis acknowledged that some fans have been less than receptive to the new character.
"Some of the comments online, I don't think people even realize how racist they sound," he said. "I'm not saying if you criticize you're a racist, but if someone writes, 'Why do we need Riri Williams we already have Miles [Morales, a black and Hispanic Spider-Man]?' that's a weird thing to say."
Marvel is well known for mixing things up when it comes to diversity, at least recently.
In just the past few years, the comic company has, in addition to Williams and Morales, introduced a female Thor, an African-American Captain America and a Muslim Ms. Marvel.
Bendis said he sees the evolution of Iron Man as a natural progression.
"I think what's most important is that the character is created in an organic setting," he said. "We never had a meeting saying, 'we need to create this character.' It's inspired by the world around me and not seeing that represented enough in popular culture."

Ray J to be first to sue Kanye West for ‘Famous’ video

Ray J to be first to sue Kanye West for ‘Famous’ video
Ray J isn’t impressed with Kanye West’s depiction of him in ‘Famous’ video

Kanye West‘s cheeky plea to be sued for his controversial ‘Famous’ music video is set to be duly obliged by nemesis, Ray J.
With series of taunts from ‘Ye, such as his lyrics on ‘Highlights’ off his Life Of Pablo album on which he rapped: ‘Me and Ray J would probably be friends if we wasn’t in love with the same bitch. You might have it first, but I’m rich though’, culminating into the singer’s naked depiction in ‘Famous’, Ray J seems to have had enough and is set to sue.
‘We’re talking about potentially doing something. There’s too many times Kanye has done this. You can’t really continue to use people’s likenesses without either compensation or clearance,’his manager, David Weintraub told Heat.
‘The ‘Famous’ video is like the fourth time in six months Kanye has done this. There were discussions, but it’s getting old, so our legal team is working out what we want to do with everything.’
More to come? Kanye is fully prepared, we are sure…
